What Are Injection Molding Resins?
Injection molding resins are thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers that become pliable and moldable when heated above a specific temperature (the required temperature varies by material) and that solidify as they cool back to ambient temperature. When heated, injection molding resins transform into a near-liquid state, which allows them to be injected into the part mold under pressure and to completely fill the mold cavity.
Thermoplastic injection molding resins can be recycled, reheated, and reshaped via injection molding multiple times; thermosetting injection molding resins for irreversible chemical bonds as they cure, which prevents them from being reused in injection molding.
Exotic Injection Molding Resins for All Applications

An aromatic semi-crystalline polymer with superior strength, stiffness, and impact resistance. PEEK exhibits excellent mechanical properties, high resistance to chemical and thermal degradation, and a highly favorable tensile-strength-to-weight ratio.
A modified version of PEEK, this exotic injection molding resin provides even greater durability and ductility, and higher temperature resistance. It provides excellent chemical resistance, stiffness, and strength in all applications.
PEI injection molding resins exhibit excellent rigidity and strength at high temperatures, long-term heat resistance, excellent electrical properties, and good mechanical strength. PEI can be used to replace metal parts in many structural applications.
With a tensile strength of 21,800 psi and a UL 90 V-0 flame rating, PPS is excellent for severe applications. It also offers good chemical resistance, electrical properties, and dimensional stability.
COC provides high clarity and outstanding light transmission, makes an excellent water vapor barrier, and is biocompatible. This exotic injection molding resin is ideal for lenses, touchscreens, and packaging products.
COP exhibits high transparency and thermal stability, low water absorption, and good chemical resistance. Available in multiple grades, these exotic injection molding resins are an excellent option for lab test equipment, optical components, and antennae.
This heat-conveying polymer is lightweight, cost-effective, and highly moldable, making it ideal for complex designs. Three grades are available, each providing unique benefits for specialized applications.
With high flow and good mechanical properties, LCP injection molding resin is frequently used in electronics applications. LCP exhibits high strength at high temperatures, and extreme chemical resistance.
TPEs and TPUs comprise six classes of exotic injection molding resins, all of which exhibit excellent flexibility, with durometer levels from Shore A 20 to Shore D 90. These materials do not require stabilizers, cure systems, or reinforcing agents.
A popular injection molding resin for medical devices, Pebax offers very low density, high tensile strength, high flexibility at low temps, and good resistance to many chemical solvents. Three grades are available.
This thermoplastic injection molding resin exhibits excellent hydrolytic stability and superior toughness. It also provides good chemical and radiation resistance, good dielectric properties, and excellent strength and rigidity.

Injection Molding with Carbon Fiber Additives
Carbon fiber can be added to most of the resins we work with to enhance the resin’s properties. Molding with carbon fiber infuses strands of this material directly into the resin itself, boosting the strength and durability of the thermoplastic.
Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components are being used more and more frequently to replace metal parts in new product designs. CFRPs can provide strength equal to steel at a fraction of the weight.

Ticona creates a number of engineered injection molding resins with unique characteristics to meet the needs of electronics manufacturers and other high-tech industries. RTP specializes in modifying standard polymer materials to create customized blends which add or improve certain characteristics of the base materials.
